is GLAM really Metal?
Maybe I have too much time on my hands. Maybe, in the end what IS or ASN’T Metal is more subjective than people want to admit.
I realize time has changed to a degree what Metal represents, but oftentimes it seems something is derided as Non-Metal, and it usually seems to be because it has become Popular, or it’s one of the more Melodic Genres, like Gothic.
BUt I just want to know… how is THIS Metal?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdDxz2bkf hE
and THIS is not?

It’s harder, faster, more technical and definitely "Heavier".
OR
THIS……

( Yes, I know Metallica is considered a Metal band, but Load and RelOad are generally considered Alt Rock or Hard Rock albums )
White Snake, White Lion, Slaughter? Metal? Really?
Even a lot of the Prince of Darkness’ early solo Material seems to be Metal in name only……
Goodbye to Romance, Mr Crowley, Steal Away the Night, Believer, Tonight, Little Dolls, Diary of a MAdman, So Tired, Killer of Giants, jus tto name a few off the first 4 albums off the top of my head…. I love Ozzy, love what he did in Sabbath…. but those are Metal How? ( Simple… because he used to be the Singer for the first Metal band… yeah. )
MQ- Name some "Bubble" Metal Bands?
BQ- Why do some people think it’s an insult to say something isn’t Metal… particualrly if it isn’t? Can’t something still be good if it’s Hard/Alt Rock?
( Seems to me like the difference between a Ferrari and a Porshce….. both are kick butt… one jsut happens to be a lot flashier than the other. Not like someone went and compared a Ferrari to a KIA or anyting )
Dunno… I’ve had a long miserable day, and maybe I’m just being grouchy……….
Long and miserable…perfect way to describe my day as well. Hope we both have a better day tomorrow, KP.
I think *all* of this is so subjective…one man’s Hard Rock is another man’s Metal. There are no concrete rules or any science behind the whole genre thing as far as I’m concerned, and it’s wild how quickly and easily opinion is given and passed off as fact.
I remember when a lot of those bands were big and I never really classified them as Metal. But again, that’s my opinion.
MQ: Cinderella, maybe? I don’t know.
BQ: That’s a great question! When did Hard Rock become an insult? Maybe it is in certain circles?

Glam is like a spin-off of those bad-ass hair bands
and Metallica is thrash metal, Evanescence is boring, and what the hell is that other thing?

Glam is the best type of metal. The music is catchy, the singers have talent and the special effects are impressive.

Sure it is.
Try telling Dee Snider Twisted Sister wasn’t Metal, see what he says about it.
Now as to Your case studies, Warrant is Hair Metal and Hair Metal is Metal, the Guitars, the Volume, the Attitude makes it all Metal. If it was Metal then it’s Metal now. I don’t care if Metal gets so damn b400tal it turns into People blowing up cars with nail guns to the accompaniment of nuclear explosions, it don’t make old the Metal any less Metal.
Whitesnake’s later albums, White Lion, Slaughter, Metal?
Ab so f-ing lutley.
MA: Evanescence
BA: I don’t think it’s an insult, but after 25+ years I get mighty tired of the B4ootal crowd and the Trve Kvlt bunch (Most of whom were sucking on slurpees and watching Capt Kangaroo when I was in Moshpits at metallica shows) trying to tell Me what is and ain’t Metal. It just gets OLD.

Gimme a P! Gimme an E! Gimme an A! Gimme a C! Gimme an H! What’s that spell? AWESOMENESS!!!
Well, you told me to be a cheerleader.
I guess I took it the wrong way. But yeah like I said I don’t really have anything of any particular value to add to the subject. I’m not really a glam fan.
But I see the point and yeah, genre-placing continues to be a finicky subject to deal with. And saying something is "not metal" as an insult is usually used by those who don’t listen to anything but metal, which I (and I assume you) find to be boring after awhile. Well not necessarily BORING, but not as filling. Like a music pie, but you’re only getting the whipped cream. It’s nice but there could be so much more!
It’s sort of how I disagree with calling Within Temptation gothic rock/metal. I think their very first album and first EP contained elements of it, but that was it. I would definitely class Mother Earth as a metal album – not every song, such as "Never-Ending Story", but as a whole, yes. I would also agree that they’re turning more to rock nowadays than metal, but does that make them bad? Not in my book. ‘course, what do I know, I actually LIKE these so-called girly rock bands.
MA: Pretty much every female-fronted metal band from Europe that doesn’t contain a male growler
NP: Citizen Cope – "Let The Drummer Kick"
