Can't read classic books.?
I’m entering ninth grade and I love books. I generally read a lot. Not much of non-fiction, but I’ve read more than othet kids around my age. I usually read chick-flick like Gossip Girl, but recently, I’ve been kinda bored reading those kind of books. I love reading Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, Heidi, Pollyanna, Little Princess, but somehow I can’t concentrate reading other classic books. Can I do something about it. My reading level is high compared to other students and I score really above average on TOFEL.
Jane Eyre was OK. I read stuff like the Da Vinci Code and Shopaholic series.

I don’t think it is that you can’t but more like can’t get involved in the story or the characters, they fail to "hook" you. It happened to me. Have you tried the other work from Louisa May Alcott, Little Women had a couple of sequels. I read Jane Eyre for the first time when I was in my teens (14 or so if memory serves). Have you tried Jane Austen yet? You probably will like The Secret Garden as well, judging from the classics you mention you’ve liked.

Of modern authors, Meg Cabot is very good (I read her books along with my niece, who is 13). She has series for adults and series for young adults. I just got my niece Nicola and the Viscount, which is a regency set historical young adult romance. Looks like a good read, and it’s not long.

Well then don’t read classic Novels. There are plenty new literature coming out all the time. You should just try going to the adult section and picking up a book.

Maybe you should read something with drama (since Gossip Girl etc. has it)? Jane Austen books are good. Pride and Prejudice, or Sense and Sensibility, or (one of my favs!) Mansfield Park. Btw, I love Little Princess, too! :]

You like the books with women at the center. Not too many of the classics are like that.

Try Shakespeare’s "Anthony & Cleopatra". Read GB Shaw’s "Man & Superman".

Read The Tale of Genji, Sei Shonogon’s Pillow Book.

There is stuff, just not out of Greece or Rome.

Have you tried Jane Eyre?
The first two pages are a bit boring. But after that it gets better.

Anyways, force yourself to read a classic. I kinda have the same problems, but thats only with one book. And that one book is Emma by Jane Austen.

Hi
I had the same problem a little while ago.
I read some of the more modern classics such as Catcher in the Rye (which is also really short) or maybe classic books which have been made into films you might like.
Another thing you could try is reading classic comedy books. I don’t really know what counts as classic comedy in the States, as I am from Britain (so I also don’t know what ninth grade is!!), but it’s easier to read those I find, as they are less heavy.
Another thing you could do is read aloud. I tried reading a Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde a few years ago, and couldn’t get into it at all, but after I read the first few chapters aloud to myself, I was able to concentrate on it and then read it in my head after.

Hope this helps!!!
